The second edition of the Angkor Fourball Golf Championship produced a dramatic finish at the Angkor Golf Resort with the cousin-pairing of Amish Jaitha and Khusaal Thackersey retaining their title at the award-winning Sir Nick Faldo-designed course in Siem Reap yesterday.
The Indian winning combine, playing off handicaps of one and three, posted a 36-hole 10 under par total of 134 to claim a three shot victory over local favourites Ly Hong and Tan Savun. Jaitha and Thackersey proved too strong and crafty for the field, firing six birdies and one eagle in a bogey-free final round. The younger of the two, Thackersey holed his third shot from 60 yards for an eagle on the par 5 third hole and the partners never loosened their grip from that point on.
Meanwhile, left-handed Ly Hong and Tan Savun were on level terms after day one, but after a slow start in the final round they were unable to keep up with the reigning champions, despite an impressive second round 67 (-5).
The net division was dominated by local talent, with big hitting pair Thong Sokhamony and Peou Pich Meta taking top spot with an incredible two-round total of 122 (-22).
Two shots back in second place was the mixed pairing of long-term Cambodian resident Alex Sutherland and local female golfer Tevy Sareoun, who combined well for a two round total of 124 (-20).
In third place, making the short trip from Phnom Penh, was Ly Kea and Seng Van Seiha with a two-round total of 127 (-17).
With seven mixed pairs taking part, a special prize was awarded to Amarjit Banwaitt and Jittina Tinpranee for their score of 137 (-7).
In addition to the formal prizes, a number of other prizes were awarded for nearest the pin and longest drive each day, together with the best first and second day scores.
“It was fantastic to have the opportunity to defend our title and even sweeter to retain it. Khusaal and I really enjoy the course here and always seem to gel well together,’’ Amish Jaitha told the Post.
“This was our fourth visit to Siem Reap and we look forward to returning again soon.
“We commend the team at the AGR for a fantastic job of hosting these events and the course was once again in fine condition,’’ he added.
AGR Director of Golf, David Baron said: “It has been a fantastic weekend and, despite the blistering heat, the quality of golf was second to none. Amish and Khusaal know each other’s game very well and combined impeccably. They’re deserving champions.’’
“It was pleasing to have such a great response to the event and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the sponsors who helped enhance the event and the hospitality provided’’, David Baron said.
